The introduction of Golf in Portugal happened at the end of the 19th century and was due to the British colony that lived in the region of Oporto and that was dedicated to the production and commerce of Port wine. The first golf course in Portugal, Oporto Niblicks in Espinho, was founded by members of this community in 1890.
Later in 1922, appears Lisbon Sports Club, also founded by British (employees of the telephone company).
From the 80 and 90 decades of the last century, golf in Portugal is developing a lot.
Nowadays, Portugal, with its 300 days of sunshine per year, assumes, more and more, as a preferred destination for lovers of this sport.
Proof of this is the fact that Portugal has been distinguished, for four consecutive years (2014 / 2017), with the World Golf Awards - best golf destination in the world.
A number of factors have contributed to this achievement, such as the climate, the quantity and quality of golf courses (around 90) spread from north to south of the country, including the islands, allied to the fact that Portugal currently has an integrated hotel offer aimed at the golfer.
Some of the Portuguese courses were designed by famous names such as Nick Faldo, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer or the case of the country's most recent golf course, the West Cliffs Golf in the Óbidos area, designed by Cynthia Dye and awarded a World Golf Award 2017 for "Best New Golf Course in the World".
